EPGC Křetínského a Tkáče announced its intention to take over the shares of the German chain Metro, which owns MAKRO in the Czech Republic | Companies and markets

Prague The investment company EP Global Commerce (EPGC) of the Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský and the Slovak investor Patrik Tkáč is striving to increase its share in the German retail chain Metro. It therefore announced its intention to submit a voluntary takeover bid for the company’s shares. It is now the largest shareholder with a share of 29.9 percent. EPGC spokesman Daniel Častvaj informed about it on Sunday. Metro is the owner of Makro wholesalers in the Czech Republic.

The goal is to increase the EPGC’s share in Metro by over 30 percent, said Častvaj. The offer price corresponds to the weighted average price of Metro shares on the stock exchange over the last three months. The expected offer price per ordinary share is approximately 8.49 euros (approximately 226 crowns) and about 8.87 euros (approximately 236 crowns) per preferred share. “The offer is not conditioned by any minimum limit on the number of shares offered,” added Častvaj.

Křetínský and Tkáč joined the German company in the summer of 2018. Reuters reported at the beginning of last year that Křetínský was preparing to take over the German retail company Metro. So far, however, he has not succeeded.

Křetínský is, among other things, the majority owner and chairman of the board of the Energy and Industrial Holding (EPH). As an investor, it is also involved in other sectors, through Czech Media Invest (media), EP Global Commerce (wholesale), Mall Group (e-commerce) or EP Industries (industrial assets). He is also the Chairman of the Board of AC Sparta Prague Football.

Metro has been selling some of its divisions in recent years to focus on its core wholesale activities. The company has over 770 Cash & Carry wholesalers in 26 countries, which employ over 150,000 people. The group has been represented in the Czech Republic since 1997. Its Makro Cash & Carry ČR division operates 13 wholesale centers in the Czech Republic.
