Enough: Police fear contempt in André Ventura’s ‘manifest’

The Chega demonstration under the motto “Portugal is not racist” is being viewed with apprehension by the Lisbon PSP: there are fears that there will be disagreements between elements of the nationalist extreme right and anti-fascist groups that may appear along the route between the Marquis de Pombal and Praça do Comércio.

“Civilian teams will be on the ground to monitor suspicious movements. The teams of the Special Police Unit will also be on the alert, ”admits a PSP source who ensures that security forces and services are prevented in the worst case. PSP sources fear that, if there are clashes with anti-racist elements, some of the agents may take sides with the demonstrators linked to Chega, due to party sympathies. This idea, however, is denied by Peixoto Rodrigues, a union leader of the PSP who was also a candidate for the Europeans by the Basta coalition (including Chega): “I do not admit that there is partiality in a hypothetical police intervention. A policeman decides in favor of the law. ”
