The train drivers’ union GDL has been on strike on passenger traffic throughout Germany since last night. Deutsche Bahn has also issued replacement timetables for Lower Saxony.
According to a train spokeswoman, the situation at the train stations remained calm in the morning. The passengers apparently prepared for the strike. Deutsche Bahn is trying to provide a basic range of local and long-distance trains, the spokeswoman said.
These trains operate in Lower Saxony and Bremen
- RE 1 (Norddeich (Mole) – Bremen Hbf – Hannover Hbf): The trains usually run every two hours
- RE 9 (Osnabrück Hbf – (Bremen Hbf) – Bremerhaven-Lehe): The trains usually run every two hours between Bremen Hbf and Osnabrück. Please use the NordWestBahn (RS2) on the Bremen Hbf and Bremerhaven-Lehe section
- RB 44/48 (Braunschweig Hbf – Salzgitter-Lebenstedt): A rail replacement service is set up every hour
- RB 45 (Braunschweig Hbf – Schöppenstedt): The trains usually run every two hours
- RB 46 (Braunschweig Hbf – Herzberg (Harz): The trains usually run every two hours
- RB 80/81 (Bodenfelde – Northeim (Han)): A rail replacement service has been set up every two hours / (Northeim (Han) – Nordhausen): The trains on both lines are usually combined every two hours
- RB 82 (Göttingen – Kreiensen – Bad Harzburg): The trains usually run every two hours
- RB 86 (Einbeck Mitte – Göttingen): The trains run on this section of the route between Einbeck / Mitte and Einbeck-Salzderhelden, continuous trains to / from Göttingen are canceled
- RE 5 (Cuxhaven – Hamburg Hbf): Most of the trains run every hour
- S1 (All – Hannover Hbf – Haste): The trains usually run every two hours
- S2 (Nienburg – Hanover – Haste): The trains usually run every two hours
- S3 (Hildesheim Hbf – Lehrte – Hannover Hbf): These trains are canceled. Please use the Westfalenbahn trains between Hannover Hbf and Lehrte (RE 60 / RE 70)
- S4 (Bennemühlen – Langenhagen Mitte): A rail replacement service is set up every two hours / (Langenhagen Mitte – Hannover Hbf / Hildesheim Hbf): These trains are canceled. Please use the Erixx and Metronom trains between Langenhagen Mitte and Hannover Hbf / Hildesheim Hbf
- S5 (Hanover Airport – Hameln (-Paderborn)): The trains run between Hanover Airport and Hameln / Bad Pyrmont every hour. Between Hameln and Paderborn every three hours
- S7 (Celle – Lehrte): A rail replacement service is set up every two hours / (Lehrte – Hannover Hbf): These trains are canceled. Please use the Westfalenbahn trains between Hannover Hbf and Lehrte (RE 60 / RE 70)
Replacement bus service in progress
In addition to the minimum timetable offer with trains, the railway is trying to offer travel alternatives by bus, according to the information on its website. A replacement concept is currently being worked out. The train drivers’ strike is expected to end after 48 hours at 2 a.m. on Wednesday. The private railways such as the Nordwestbahn, the Metronom and the erixx are not affected by the work stoppage.
Bahn appeals: postpone long-distance travel, tickets remain valid
Despite the replacement schedule, there will be significant restrictions for passengers today and tomorrow, said the rail spokeswoman. In this situation, one cannot guarantee that all travelers will reach their destination, it says on the Homepage of the Deutsche Bahn. The company is asking travelers to postpone their long-distance trips planned for today and tomorrow if they are not absolutely necessary. Tickets already purchased remain valid until September 4th or can be canceled free of charge.
GDL does not accept the offer of the railway
On Sunday, Deutsche Bahn asked the GDL to cancel the strike in passenger traffic. The company had offered the train drivers to talk about a corona bonus required by the GDL. GDL boss Claus Weselsky described the offer as a sham offer. “The present offer is just another smoke candle and another attempt to fool the public,” said Weselsky. The GDL demands a corona premium of 600 euros and 3.2 percent more money in two stages.
