The endocrinóloga of EsSalud, Dr. Elizabeth Salsavilca, warned that people who suffer from hyperglycemia are prone to more severe pictures of coronavirus.
He indicated that the basic problem is the hyperglycemia that causes the increase in membrane receptors called EK2, which makes the differentiation between a tight and inflamed artery or a healthy one without inflammation.
He explained that when the virus comes, it attaches itself to the EK2 that is on the surface of the endotheliums of all arteries. “Endotheliums are the cells that form inside the arteries,” he said.
“Because of hyperglycemia, the body has to form more EK2, which is the natural receptor for viruses. If there is more EK2, I receive more viral load and the inflammation will be greater, ”he said.
