Employees Fight for Dignity: Mobilization and Support in the Onet Strike at Montpellier University Hospital

It is a real lesson in determination given to us by the Onet employees who maintain the Montpellier University Hospital, who have been on strike since Wednesday September 13.

Mobilized against unbearable working conditions and an employer who imposes infernal speeds and very heavy monitoring protocols for the work carried out, and for a bonus equivalent to a 13th month, the strikers face a management which remains deaf to their demands. Worse, the local management of Onet, and the regional management which came to reinforce it, came several times to the picket line to provoke the strikers and try to demoralize it.

The fight of these 40 employees, who fight above all for their dignity, finds more and more echo in the city, as shown their strike fund which is approaching 10,000 euros. If the impressive determination of the strikers plays a role in the support they find outside, it is also and above all the political and symbolic character of this strike which leads to such solidarity. Indeed, this strike is above all the fight for the dignity of overexploited women and men, facing a multinational specializing in precarious contracts and imposed part-time work. Essential workers who have been on the front line of the Covid epidemic to ensure the very first care provided in the hospital: hygiene.

This support has materialized in recent weeks in different ways: daily presence of supporters on the strike picket, support rally in front of the hospital on Friday September 22, nearly 10,000 euros donated to the strike fund, or even the presence of support for a rally in front of the prefecture called by the strikers on Thursday, October 5.

To take a step forward in this support which has been expressed spontaneously until now, a meeting took place on Friday October 6 at the initiative of Permanent Revolution activists to launch a broad support committee, which brings together all the people wishing to provide aid to the strikers. New proof of the sympathy that exists for the strike: nearly thirty people, activists from political organizations such as the NPA or La France Insoumise, members of trade union organizations or people without militant commitment, met to coordinate and organize support for the strike.

Two clear objectives emerged from this meeting: to give maximum visibility to the strike, and to raise as much money as possible for the strike fund.

The next morning, the support committee began to function, organizing a collection for the strike fund at the Arceaux market on Saturday morning, then at the Antigone market on Sunday, which resulted in nearly 300 euros being donated. to the strike fund.

In the committee which brings together several dozen people at this time, teams are organizing themselves to go and make collages of support for the strikers in town, to plan other interventions in the markets like this Tuesday, October 10 where more than 150 euros have to again been collected in Les Arceaux, or even organize an evening in support of the strikers.

At the demonstration on October 13, supporters ran a stand selling cakes for the benefit of the strike fund.

This militant effervescence could help the strike take on another dimension in the city, by overcoming the effect of under-media coverage of a struggle that is nevertheless impressive, and prove to be an important element in allowing the strikers to bend their management!
