Embracer Group closes former Square Enix Montréal shortly after acquisition – Games – News

Embracer Group closes the doors of the already acquired Onoma gaming studio. This studio, formerly Square Enix Montréal, developed Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO among others. Some employees are transferred to the sister studio Eidos Montréal.

Confirm Embracer Group opposite Bloomberg that the closure of the firm will affect approximately two hundred employees. Some of the employees will be relocated to Eidos-Montréal, although it is unknown how many people are involved.

In May sold Square Enix Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montréal and Square Enix Montréal studios to Embracer Group for $ 300 million. In early October, the latter study was renamed Onoma, with ‘onama’ as the Greek word for ‘name’, thus reflecting the ‘infinite possibilities of names’.

Bloomberg reports on the basis of anonymous stakeholders that Embracer Group is closing the study in question due to budget cuts. Eidos Montreal would also be affected. This study would reduce the size of an unannounced project and wipe out another completely. On Wednesday it was reported that the Canadian developer is working on a new game Deus Ex; it is unclear whether this game will be affected by the alleged budget cuts.
