Eliminate IVU in food prepared from tomorrow

The prepared foods will be exempt from the collection of the Sales and Use Tax (IVU) from tomorrow, Friday, confirmed the governor Wanda Vázquez Garced.

This measure will be temporary due to the crisis generated by the coronavirus In Puerto Rico.

Vázquez Garced explained that the exemption will begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ending at 11:59 p.m. April 19.

“This is an additional measure that is taken in favor of all citizens in the face of the health emergency that we are facing due to COVID-19”, the president expressed through a press release.

The Secretary of the Treasury, Francisco Parés, indicated that the measure also includes carbonated drinks, pastry products and sweets.

However, the exemption does not apply to the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Puerto Rico is under a curfew to contain the spread of the virus, but businesses that sell prepared foods are providing servicarro or “carry out.”

Parés indicated that all those individuals who need to visit commercial locations or programming centers to carry out the necessary programming so that the merchant’s systems do not impose the SUT during the period of the exemption, will be considered essential services, so they may transit on public roads without problems between 5:00 am at 9:00 p.m.

“This determination as ‘essential services’, is exclusive to individuals who are engaged in the process of programming the systems for the collection of IVU”, stressed when indicating that these people should always have on hand the administrative order of the Treasury for identification purposes before the authorities.
