According to a survey, millions of people in Germany cannot afford a meal with meat, fish or equivalent vegetarian content at least every other day. Left-wing politician Dietmar Bartsch blames the government.

Zehn million Germans are affected: 11.4 percent of Germans cannot afford a meal with meat, poultry or fish every other day. They also cannot pay for an equivalent vegetarian meal. This emerges from new Eurostat data for 2022, which the left-wing parliamentary group has requested from the Federal Statistical Office. The figures are available from the editorial network Germany (RND).

Questions were asked about the “financial inability to afford a meal with meat, poultry or fish (or a corresponding vegetarian meal) every other day”. The group of those affected has grown: in 2021 this was still the case for 10.5 percent of Germans, last year for the 11.4 percent already mentioned. That’s almost ten million people in Germany.

According to the data, single parents are particularly badly affected. 19.3 percent – almost every fifth single person with children – are unable to eat meat or fish or an equivalent vegetarian meal every two days. According to the data, there is also a significant increase from 2021 to 2022: from 16.7 to 19.3 percent.

Bartsch blames the explosion in food prices

Left parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch criticized the RND: “The federal government has done nothing against the explosion in food prices. The supermarket has become a haven for cashing in. The higher the prices, the higher the pasta-with-ketchup ratio.”

The left-wing politician insisted on reducing VAT to zero: “We need at least a temporary suspension of VAT on staple foods, consistent state price controls in supermarket groups and the introduction of real basic child security.”
