Electric Car Sales in Jakarta: Challenges and Opportunities for Lower Prices

Jakarta

Although the demand continues to grow, sales electric car still not keep up with gasoline cars. There are many reasons, ranging from the high price to the fear of limited infrastructure.

Now, the average price tag for electric cars is still above Rp. 1 billion. In fact, the Wuling Air ev is the only vehicle sold for under IDR 500 million. These conditions make consumers think twice about buying it.

Researcher at the Institute for Economic and Social Research (LPEM) at the University of Indonesia (UI), Riyanto said that in order to reach more buyers, electric cars should be priced in the range of Rp. 300-400 million.

Interestingly, he said, the opportunity for electric cars to be sold cheaply is very likely to materialize in the future. This is because battery prices continue to decline from year to year.

“So 40-50 percent of the cost of producing an electric car is actually in the battery. When the battery is cheap, the selling price of the vehicle also goes down,” said Riyanto while delivering a presentation at the Ministry of Industry’s office, South Jakarta, Tuesday (8/8).

“But if we look at research from Bloomberg, the price of lithium-ion batteries continues to fall. Previously it was US$ 200 per kWh, in 2030 it will be only US$ 60 kWh. That will definitely affect the price of cars,” he added.

According to him, electrification is related to price. Manufacturers who are able to present cheap electric cars are believed to be able to win the market.

Furthermore, Riyanto also explained the reasons why Indonesian people do not want to fully switch to electric cars. Apart from price, there are other reasons such as the lack of infrastructure, the long battery charging time, to the questionable resale price.

“So there are two considerations for a consumer buying a vehicle: able and willing. If he can afford it, but wants it, it’s useless. And vice versa,” he said.

It is known, according to data from Gaikindo (Indonesian Association of Automotive Industries), sales of electric cars during 2022 will be at 10,327 units. Meanwhile, for this year, until June it has reached 5,850 units.
