Elda’s dressmakers make thousands of masks to donate to the hospital | The Window | The coffee growers

For days the Elda and Petrer apparatuses make thousands of masks at home to face the shortage at the General University Hospital of Elda-Petrer. In ‘La Ventana’ we have spoken with María Luisa, one of those developers who, in addition to her work, Altruistically helps in the coronavirus crisis by sewing masks.

Maria Luisa He works in this industry for more than 30 years and last Saturday he made 160 masks. To do this, María Luisa and her colleagues have had to learn to sew them because, until now, what they sewed were shoes. “We follow the steps of an explanatory video and they give us a pattern”, he says, and confesses that sewing masks is much easier than footwear.

The entire population is involved in curbing the coronavirus curve, which, unfortunately, continues to increase in Spain. María Luisa explains that designers like her are not the only protagonists in the story, but that housewives, dressmakers and companies also help in the process; “We are all one,” he says. Some of these companies have been paralyzed for a few hours a day to manufacture face masks. The involvement of so many people from Elda and Petrer is something that María Luisa presumes: Remember, the united people will never be defeated.

Inditex joins the fight against the coronavirus

Inditex has made available to the Government its logistical capacity to manufacture masks and medical supplies. Javier Ruiz, head of economy at Cadena SER, says that the company Inditex is going to donate 300,000 masks to public health and they set up 10 logistics centers to distribute all kinds of medical supplies. Thus, in addition to making your clothes, The Spanish multinational will manufacture gloves, suits, hats, face protection and everything the State asks of it.

Holland: face masks from prisons

Aid in times of crisis can come in different ways. In Holland, for example, the government has announced that prisoners will manufacture face masks starting tomorrow, a measure that has also been taken in Italy and Belgium. Imane Rachidi, a correspondent for Cadena SER in the Netherlands, reports that the government has already provided cotton fabrics and sewing machines to five prisons in the country. Authorities estimate that they can make up to 50,000 masks a week for hospitals and patients with coronavirus. “They will be simple masks and they will be made by long-term inmates, who will also make cotton hats ”, explains Imane. The idea is that they are entertained and, thus, compensate for the lack of visits suspended by the coronavirus. In addition, they will charge for the hours they work making the masks.
