Elbow instead of hand: New toilet doors in Japan

As a precautionary measure against the corona virus, a Japanese airline had new door handles for cabin toilets developed: Instead of opening the doors with the bare hand as before, the elbow is now sufficient, as a spokeswoman for the airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced in Tokyo on Wednesday.

In an industry survey among customers, according to the Japanese TV station NHK a large majority recently reported worrying about infection while using a seat or toilet. Avoiding contact with objects such as doorknobs or railings that many other people have touched before is one of the general measures to reduce the risk of infection. Even if it is still unclear how long corona viruses can survive on surfaces.

The new door handles are currently being tested at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, it said. If they prove practical, consider introducing them to airplanes after consulting customers.
