Elbe deepening: rare fish delays completion | NDR.de – news

After 15 years of planning and construction, the deepening of the Elbe will be largely finished in the coming weeks. However, ships may not initially come to Hamburg with a full meter more draft.

A rare fish is one of the reasons why Hamburg and the federal government are not yet able to conclude the entire deepening of the Elbe immediately: The feint spawns along the Elbe from mid-April – and therefore dredging is not allowed in spring and early summer. In around six weeks there won’t be the full one, but at least one meter more, says Jens Meier, head of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). They want to release things that are possible very early on.

Work continues in summer

By the summer, pilots and captains should then gain experience of how large ships move on the dredged Elbe. And after the spawning season of the feint ends at the end of June, the dredgers can approach again. It is not yet clear when exactly the deepened Elbe fairway will be released. According to Senator for Economic Affairs Michael Westhagemann (independent) this year.
