At least 28 people, a Colombian among them, would be involved in the attack that wounded the chief of the Mexico City police in addition to causing three deaths, the Attorney General’s Office reported on Friday.
The Attorney General’s spokesman, Ulises Lara, said 12 suspects were arrested for participating in the attack against Mexico City’s Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, which occurred this morning in a residential neighborhood of Mexico City.
García Harfuch was wounded with three bullets and after undergoing surgery he was declared out of danger, authorities reported.
Lara confirmed that the detainees for the attack are originally from Mexico and the states of Jalisco, Guerrero, Nayarit, Chihuahua, Michoacán, and “one is of Colombian nationality,” he added.
When questioning the detainees, “it was learned that they were possibly hired three weeks prior to the event and that they would receive an amount of money in exchange,” the spokesperson explained.
In addition, he confirmed that it was learned that “they were organized into four cells made up of seven members each, and they were concentrated in Mexico City,” so the number of those involved could be 28 people.
The spokesman said that these people were transported in two vans to the scene of the attack at 04:00 local time (09:00 GMT) and were instructed to verify whether patrols from the Ministry of Citizen Security were in transit.
On Thursday, June 25, they transferred them to different places with their heads covered to give them weapons and took them to the three points where they could intercept the vehicle of the chief of the capital’s police.
The spokesperson confirmed that several weapons of different calibers have been confiscated, including a Barret rifle, fragmentation and smoke grenades, telephones, radio equipment, bulletproof vests and 13 vehicles.
Among the deceased are two police officers and a woman who was passing by the scene of the attack.
