The El Salvador men’s team won the series against Curacao 3-0 in the group stage of the U14 Junior Tennis World Cup Pre-qualification of Central America and the Caribbean.

The day began with the game between the national Marco Avendaño and Jean-Jacques Ricaud, the first match of the series between El Salvador and Curacao, which took place on the Marcelo Arévalo field of the Merliot Sports Center.

Avendaño managed to score the first point for the El Salvador team by beating the Caribbean team in straight sets 6-1 and 6-1.

“I felt super good for having won the first game. I entered the court with more confidence and that helped me resolve the game better,” Avendaño said.

The second match of the series was played by the Salvadoran Sebastián Martínez and the Curacao-born Leonardo Winkel. The Cuscatleco won 6-1 and 6-2 and with this achieved the second point for the country, ensuring victory in the series.

“I feel very happy for having won the game with which we defined the series. I feel that it was a very difficult match because not all opponents are easy here, since each country brings its top three athletes,” mentioned Sebastián Martínez.

In men’s doubles, a duel that was already pending, Mateo Gutiérrez and Sebastián Martínez defeated Leonardo Winkel and Orlando Zimmerman 2-0 (6-0 and 6-2) and sealed the series against Curacao with a 3-0 sweep.

“I felt very comfortable and calm thanks to the work of my teammates who won the first two games. It was not easy because the athletes who are in the competition have shown a very high level,” said Mateo Gutiérrez.

For his part, the national team leader evaluated the performance of the tennis players on the second day of the WJT.

“Thank God it has gone very well for us, the players have had a day where they have competed very well and achieved very important victories for our representation,” commented Salvador Sánchez, team captain.

Tomorrow, the women’s team begins the day against Suriname, while the men’s team will have action against Aruba.
