El Paso runs out of health workers… and that’s why it offers hiring bonuses of 5 thousand dollars – El Financiero

The shortage of health workers due to resignations, deaths and illness due to COVID-19 has forced hospitals and care centers at the service of the State (SSLC, in English) to offer hiring bonuses for up to 5 thousand dollars in 18 Texas cities, including El Paso.

“We want to hire qualified and motivated health professionals to help the residents of our living centers and the patients of our state hospitals,” said Scott Schalchlin, deputy executive commissioner of the Health and Specialty Care System of the Health Commission. and Texas Human Services (THHSC) of Texas.

These hiring bonuses are for registered nurses (RN) y licensed vocational nurses (LVN) at SSLCs and state hospitals, as well as for psychiatric nursing assistants (PNAs) at entity medical units and direct support professionals (DSPs) at SSLCs.


Registered nurses are eligible for bonuses of $5,000, while qualifying LVN hires could receive $3,500. The DSPs and PNAs will be able to obtain bonuses of 2 thousand 500 dollars.

“It’s a tempting offer”, commented Brenda Galván, a resident of El Paso and who is a nurse but has been a homemaker for 4 years. “I was thinking about going back to work and a bonus like that makes it a little more attractive.”

State assisted living facilities offer residential services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, while state hospitals offer psychiatric care for adults, children, and adolescents.

Vacancies are available in the cities of Abilene, Austin, Big Spring, Brenham, Corpus Christi, Denton, El Paso, Kerrville, Lubbock, Lufkin, Mexia, Richmond, Rusk, San Angelo, San Antonio, Terrell, Vernon, Waco y Wichita Falls.
