El Niño Phenomenon and Pet Immunization: Protecting Dogs and Cats Against Leptospirosis

Given the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon, the municipal Animal Welfare Directorate carries out several actions with a view to strengthening the immune system of dogs and cats.

In this context, this entity has promoted the immunization of 8,865 pets with the sextuple vaccine, which protects them against six diseases, including distemper and leptospirosis.

The latter is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from dogs to people.

Vaccination has focused on the most vulnerable sectors, that is, urban and rural areas.

In addition to vaccination, 53,552 veterinary services were performed. These health brigades were carried out in sectors such as El Morro, Posorja, Bajada de Chanduy, Chongón, Tenguel and San Rafael.

1,500 microchips have also been placed on pet animals for identification. The goal is to reach 20,000 devices.

Citizens can take their pets daily to various Animal Welfare centers, where they also offer the six-fold vaccine.

They are located on Francisco de Orellana Avenue and in the Comprehensive Municipal Care Centers (CAMI) of Trinitaria Island, Kartódromo, El Cisne, Puerto Lisa and Casa Rosada, with primary care, vaccination and sterilizations. (YO)
