Eighteen dead after military plane crashes in Sudan | NOW

In a plane crash in the Darfur region, in western Sudan, eighteen people died on Thursday.

A military transport aircraft crashed after taking off shortly before from an airport in Geneina, the capital of the Darfur region.

All eighteen passengers were killed instantly, a spokesperson for the Sudanese army reported. Among others, the entire seven-man crew died. Among the passengers were three judges and four children.

The Sudanese government has launched an investigation into how the aircraft was able to crash. Recently violent conflicts between different ethnic groups took place in Darfur.

Due to the conflicts, security measures in and around Geneina have been tightened. The city is close to the western border of Sudan with Chad.
