Eight students charged in US after tragic hazing

Eight men have been charged with their connection to the death of an American student who died during a college hazing.

Stone Foltz was 20 years old and was attending a student party when he lost his life. The young student of Bowling Green State University died last March, three days after losing consciousness following “a hazing involving heavy drinking”. The evening had been organized by the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, which the student hoped to join. It had taken place off campus.

Eight young men were indicted on Wednesday for their connection in the tragic case: Jacob Krinn, 20; Daylen Dunson, 20; Canyon Caldwell, 21; Troy Henricksen, 23; Niall Sweeney, 21; Jarrett Prizel, 19; Aaron Lehane, 21; and Benjamin Boyers, 21. The People magazine website explains that Jacob Krinn was Stone Foltz’s “temporary big brother” in the fraternity. He is charged with first degree manslaughter and reckless homicide, in addition to third degree manslaughter and hazing charges. The other five students are charged with third degree manslaughter and hazing. Aaron Lehane is accused of concealing evidence and obstructing, NBC News reports. As for Benjamin Boyers, he is being prosecuted for hazing and illegal consumption and use of alcohol with minors.

Brotherhood banished forever

Wood County District Attorney Paul Dobson told NBC News the hazing has been an integral part of this drama. He added that the party attendees each received a 750ml bottle of liquor which they were forced to drink overnight. “We believe that Stone Foltz drank or almost drank his entire bottle when he was brought home by several members, including Jacob Krinn,” said the prosecutor. They then left him alone in his apartment. The next day, the student’s roommate called for help, seeing him still unconscious. He later died in hospital and the medical examiner ruled that his death was accidental.

The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity has been banned from Bowling Green for violating the student code of conduct. “It’s a permanent loss of recognition, the fraternity will never be able to open again,” the university said. The eight men are due to appear in court on May 19. A fundraising page has been opened in honor of Stone Foltz, by his aunt. “He gave of his time and his love to many families, friends and others whom he met during his short journey in this world. We would like to honor his memory by creating a fund to help those in need ”, it is written.
