Egyptian Preparations for Possible Influx of Wounded Palestinians: Field Hospitals and Security Measures

The Egyptian authorities are setting up three field hospitals and tents in North Sinai near the Rafah border crossing in preparation for a possible influx of wounded Palestinians, according to what an American newspaper reported, citing senior Egyptian officials.

“I mentioned”Wall Street Journal“Hospitals are being installed at a time when Egypt is facing pressure to allow the entry of refugees, while Cairo has so far hesitated to allow the entry of large numbers of refugees.

In preparation for the influx of people from Gaza, Egypt has established an additional security cordon for an existing buffer zone on the border, the officials said. Al-Arish, a coastal city about an hour’s drive west of Rafah that has become a collection point for humanitarian supplies, has been closed.

Egyptian officials also discussed setting a maximum number of Palestinians that Egypt will allow into the country to 100,000, so that the authorities can manage them in narrow areas.

Officials said that preparations are also underway to set up tents in Rafah and the city of Sheikh Zuweid.

Since Saturday, a few convoys of aid have entered the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. However, international organizations considered that these quantities are almost negligible compared to the needs of the population of the Gaza Strip.

Hundreds of Hamas militants, classified as a terrorist group, infiltrated Israel from Gaza in an attack that killed more than 1,400 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to the Israeli authorities.

Israel responded to the attack with intense bombing of Gaza, killing more than 7,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to the latest statistics of the Hamas Ministry of Health in the Strip.
