Egyptian Interior Ministry Arrests Gang for Defrauding Citizens of over 99 Million Pounds

Late on Friday, the Egyptian Interior Ministry revealed details of the arrest of a gang that specialized in fraud, after it defrauded citizens and collected more than 99 million pounds from them.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said in a statement on its Facebook page: “As part of the efforts of the Ministry of Interior agencies to uncover the circumstances of what was reported to the Ashmoun Police Station in the Menoufia Security Directorate of a number of citizens working in marketing through social networking sites, they were harmed by 5 people residing in the center’s department for defrauding them.” And collecting sums of money from them amounting to more than (99 million pounds) in exchange for purchasing clothes to market them through the social networking site (Facebook) without fulfilling this.”

The statement added: “Investigations by the Public Security Sector, with the participation of the Giza and Menoufia Security Directorates, resulted in identifying the whereabouts of the accused and they were arrested.”

He continued: “By confronting them, they admitted that they had committed the incident and that they had collected the aforementioned sums of money in exchange for importing clothes from abroad for the benefit of those in charge of electronic marketing operations, and that the accused had promoted their activity through Facebook and had not fulfilled their obligations and closed their accounts used for this on social networking sites.”

The statement concluded by saying: “Legal measures were taken, and the Public Prosecution took over the investigation.”
