The minister believes that the Latvian state must reduce the influence of the Kremlin on “Latvijas gazi” and “Gaso” through the composition of shareholders. Eglītis pointed out that there are several ways to do this, and the nationalization of the company is one of the most dramatic steps.
According to Eglīš, it is not a normal situation that Latvia’s largest gas company is still being managed of Russia capital.
“As we know, Russia uses its energy resources for geopolitical purposes, and therefore I think there are debatable scenarios for these companies, because “Latvian gas“, and “Gasso” belong to a capital that is not friendly to Latvia. We will discuss this further in the coalition,” said Eglītis.
It has already been reported that the information mentioned in the media has come to the attention of the State Security Service (VDD) that the company “Latvijas gāze” has resumed purchasing gas from Russia.
According to its competence, the VDD regularly carries out checks on possible violations of sanctions. “The above-mentioned information is under the supervision of the VDD, however, we will refrain from commenting on it at the moment,” the service stated.
The audited turnover of “Latvijas gas” concern in 2021 was 583.342 million euros, which is 3.1 times more than in 2020, but the company’s profit decreased 3.4 times – to 3.24 million euros.
The largest shareholders of “Latvijas gas” are Russian “Gazprom” (34%), as well as “Marguerite Gas II.Sarl” (28.97%), “Uniper Ruhrgas International GmbH” (18.26%) and SIA “Itera Latvija” (16%). “Latvijas gas” shares are listed on the stock exchange “Nasdaq Riga“.
“Gaso”, on the other hand, is a subsidiary of “Latvijas gas”. The company is the only natural gas distribution system operator in Latvia. The company provides security of natural gas networks, technical services and accounting of natural gas consumption. “Gasso” started operating in December 2017.
The turnover of “Gasso” last year was 59.163 million euros, while the profit was 11.545 million euros.
