Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Hamouda, a teacher and consultant in psychiatry at Al-Azhar University, said that stress before the exam may be beneficial if it is in a moderate and simple manner, because it prompts us to study and prepare well before the exam, but if the tension exceeds its limit, it may lead to health problems that affect some students during the exams. This matter must be paid attention to before the start of the mid-year exams.

He explained in a special statement to “Youm7” that tension may cause arousal For the sympathetic nervous systemIt is a wide network of nerve cells that control involuntary processes in the body and secretes more of the hormone adrenaline. The person’s abilities and concentration become higher in normal stress, but if the stress exceeds its level, the person loses his focus and does not control his emotions.

He continued, saying: Excessive stress may cause some children to lose their appetite, become less focused, and increase abdominal and stomach muscle contractions, causing them to feel vomiting and nausea.

He added that stress during exams causes sleep disturbances as a result of the increased secretion of the hormone adrenaline, which affects the child’s sleep and concentration, and he is unable to retrieve information and does not pay attention or focus.

He pointed out that the increase in the stress hormone “cortisol”, which is secreted due to psychological pressure during the examination period, causes a decrease in the child’s immunity and increases the chances of him contracting infections and diseases.

The psychiatry consultant explained that irritation of the nervous system during exam stress causes tremors in the extremities. The student loses the ability to hold a pen and trembles. His extremities also become cold due to constriction of peripheral blood vessels due to fear, an increase in the hormone adrenaline, and the work of the sympathetic system.

Dr. Hamouda advised that we must have some amount of anxiety and tension in order to study, but not exceed this amount, so that it does not harm us and turn into sick anxiety or phobia that makes students flee from exams or hate the exam period.
