Education – Brandenburg an der Havel – Medical studies for prospective rural doctors started in Mainz – Education

Mainz (dpa / lrs) – At the beginning of the winter semester, people in Rhineland-Palatinate began their medical studies for the first time who had committed to later work as a country doctor or in the public health service. A total of 15 applicants had started their studies at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, the Ministry of Health announced in Mainz on Tuesday.

The students went through a multi-stage selection process. Those who have been given a place undertake to become a specialist in rural areas for at least ten years after completing their studies or to work in the public health service – otherwise there is a risk of a contractual penalty of up to 250,000 euros.

With the program, the state government wants to counteract the impending shortage of general practitioners and in the public health system. According to the ministry, applications for such study places in Rhineland-Palatinate are possible for the winter as well as for the summer semester.

“I wish the students all the best and a lot of fun with their studies,” said Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD). The medical students were not only characterized by a high level of commitment, but also by their willingness to become an important part of health care in Rhineland-Palatinate.
