Edomex government allocates 34 million pesos for agricultural insurance

The Secretary of the Field in the State of Mexico, Mercedes Colín Guadarrama, reported that as part of the strategies to face the change in weather conditions and reduce the losses of the entity’s producers, around 34 million pesos are invested, as part of the Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance Program.

He explained that in the case of the entity, the agricultural insurance was in charge of the state administration, since the Federal Government decided that this type of support would not be contracted for the peasants.

“Agricultural Insurance is being absorbed 100 percent, you know that before it was part of the Federation and part of the state, today we only have the part of the state, about 34 million pesos have been invested.”

He held that As part of this strategy, the respective policies have been delivered in municipalities such as Aculco, Jilotepec, Polotitlán, among others, that correspond to the effects registered during the past agricultural cycle, crops that were affected, mainly by climatic conditions.

“You know that now the agricultural cycles are very complicated, suddenly droughts come to us, suddenly frost or winds come to us, we have been delivering these insurance”.

He explained that ehe objective of Catastrophic Insurance is to provide direct economic support to low-income producers, mainly focused on planting corn, in order to compensate for the losses caused by extreme weather events, such as droughts, frosts, hail, wind and floods, among others.

He indicated that during the past year, the agency under his charge, conducted the respective census in which damages were registered in 20 thousand 562 hectares, for which a total compensation of 30.8 million pesos was disbursed in favor of 8,224 producers.

“With the pandemic, the only ones who have not stopped working, the only ones who have been wearing their shirts to produce the food that Mexicans and Mexicans consume are the peasants, that is why we will continue to support them, we will continue to strengthen” .

Of the little more than 20 thousand hectares that registered some type of affectation, around 7 thousand hectares were those that had a greater affectation.

“95 percent is corn, there are people who sow oats, who sow wheat; but here 95 or 96 percent of the planting is for corn, for self-consumption ”.

This insurance covers up to 20 hectares of crops per producer, with an amount of up to 1,500 pesos per hectare., in the different agricultural regions of the State of Mexico.

The state government also has a registry of 191,056 insured producers, of which 102,082 are women and 88,974 are men.

It should be noted that in 2020 147 policies for 25 thousand pesos each were delivered to the families of the insured relatives.
