It is a kind of snub to the coronavirus and its alarming topicality. In full confinement, the Olympiad of Trades Jury made public the winners of the regional events, which were held last January. For the training center of the Union of Metallurgical Industries and Trades (UIMM), which has been encouraging its young people to compete for years, it is a great gift since eleven of its apprentices successfully walk the walk.
Better still: five boys win the gold medal. Among them, three come from the Yutz training center: it is Gael Schaeffer (metal milling category); Thierry Humbert (industrial production category); Nicolas Schwing (metal turning category).
This result gives reason to the UIMM which, for years, wishes to value the apprenticeship but especially the industrial trades. At a time when the health crisis is highlighting the flaws of entire productive sectors, all over Europe, the 2020-2021 trades Olympics may well spark strong vocations.
The winners of the Grand Est will meet for the national events in Lyon next December. The next step? Shanghai, in September 2021, for the world crown. Meanwhile, everywhere in Lorraine, apprentices will have to perfect their training. Currently, they are gradually finding their way to the companies that welcome them and distance courses are provided. A singular and complex year. Another challenge.
