Éder Jofre, former boxer and world boxing champion, dies at 86 in SP | St. Paul

Former boxer and world boxing champion Éder Jofre died in the early hours of Sunday (2) in Embu das Artes, in Greater Sao Paulo.

The information was confirmed a Globe TV from his family. Relatives said Jofre had been hospitalized in a city clinic since March with pneumonia. And he died from the complications of the disease.

Jofre was considered the greatest Brazilian bantamweight boxer of all time. He was world champion in the category from 1960 to 1965. In 1973 he won the world featherweight title, an over bantamweight category.

The three-time world champion in featherweight and bantamweight was the first Brazilian to hold a world-renowned boxing belt. Also known as the “Golden Rooster”, he was inducted into the West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame in the United States in 2021.

Jofre was born on March 26, 1936. On March 4, he was admitted to a clinic in São Paulo due to pneumonia. In addition, the former boxer suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

Born into a boxing family, Jofre has lived with the sport since he was a child. Around the age of four, he entered a ring for the first time, to train with his uncle, Ricardo Zumbano.

And it was at the São Paulo Futebol Clube that he began his boxing career, with his father, Kid Jofre, as his coach.

As an athlete from Sao Paulo, he won the first Brazilian championship and competed in Brazil. Together with another Italian athlete, jumper Adhemar Ferreira da Silva, he went to represent Brazil at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.

In 2018, the film “10 seconds to win” shows Jofre’s trajectory. Actor Daniel de Oliveira played the greatest boxer in Brazilian boxing history until he won the world title in 1961 in the United States.
