Edeka and Coca-Cola in dispute: orders for some products stopped

There is trouble between Edeka and Coca-Cola: According to the beverage company, Germany’s largest food retailer has reduced its range of Coca-Cola products in some regions. There is currently an order stop there for parts of the range, Coca-Cola reported. The background, according to the journal “Lebensmittel Zeitung”, is a dispute over Coca-Cola’s price and discount policy. Edeka declined to comment.

According to “Lebensmittel Zeitung”, several Edeka regions have recommended that their merchants stop ordering products such as the 1.5-liter disposable bottle of Coke Zero, the 0.33-liter cans from the popular soft drink brands and various Vio items.

Coca-Cola emphasized that the company regretted the move. Because both sides share a long-standing successful cooperation. Coca-Cola wants to continue this partnership. The dialogue with Edeka about future cooperation therefore continues “in a constructive spirit”.

In the past months there have been violent clashes between the major German retail chains such as Edeka or Rewe and well-known brand manufacturers. The retailers did not shy away from banning popular branded products from the shelves for weeks in order to emphasize their price demands. In 2018, Edeka boycotted Nestlé products for weeks.

Conversely, well-known manufacturers such as the ketchup producer Kraft Heinz sometimes tried to force their ideas through delivery stops. Both sides accepted that customers were temporarily neglected.
