Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency on Monday. This happened after the escape of the infamous drug criminal Fito.

The drug boss, whose real name is José Adolfo Macías Villamar, was, according to the Spanish newspaper The country fifteen hours of searching in the prison in the port city of Guayaquil in southern Ecuador. Afterwards, the Ecuadorian authorities had to acknowledge that he had escaped.

Fito is the leader of the Los Choneros gang, the Ecuadorian branch of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. After Fito’s escape, unrest broke out in several prisons.

“I have just declared a national state of emergency so that the armed forces receive full political and legal support in their actions,” President Noboa said on Instagram.

Fito had already been in prison for twelve years. It’s not the first time he’s escaped. Fito is considered one of Ecuador’s most dangerous drug criminals. He is suspected of being involved in the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio last August.
