On the eve of the summer holidays, the ECTAA (European Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators) met in Riga and discussed in particular the current revision of the european package travel directive a you air passenger protection regulations.
The European Commission has decided to deal with these two texts in parallel. ECTAA in this context calls for “a harmonized approach to passenger and package traveler rights“.
For representatives of TOs and agencies, the objective is to “rebalancing responsibilities in the travel value chain. “
If the directive on package travel includes a guarantee of payment for travelers in the event of the insolvency of the tour operator, this is not the case for air transport.
The ECTAA also points to other shortcomings in terms of delays and reimbursement times for carriers. Air passengers have suffered in particular during the covid-19 pandemic.
But, after more than two years of discussions, it is becoming increasingly clear to ECTAA that “the European Commission will only propose stricter rules for tour operators without similar rules for other players.”

Commissioner Reynders is expected to announce a limit on prepayment by consumers to 20% of the package price, while no similar limitation will apply to airlines.
