Economy demands liberation: unions outraged

The unification of the Bavarian economy in Corona times calls for a large-scale liberation for companies. The reactions in Lower Franconia are divided.

In order to stimulate the economy again, the Association of the Bavarian Economy (vbw) calls for comprehensive, company-friendly structural reforms. In the first place there is the waiver of new regulations, in the second place the reduction of the existing bureaucracy in labor and tax law as well as data protection. “Anything that puts an additional burden on the economy must be avoided,” said vbw CEO Bertram Brossardt in Munich on Tuesday.

For example, the umbrella organization of Bavarian employers advocates suspending the planned basic pension, not restricting fixed-term contracts and not introducing legal rights for employees to home offices. The vbw calls “demand impulses” retrospectively for May 1 for the car industry, which should make the purchase of the car attractive to the citizens. The demand for a waiver of new bureaucracy is consensus in the Bavarian economy. Grants for new cars, on the other hand, are controversial.

IHK Mainfranken wants cross-sector economic programs

Sascha Genders, deputy general manager of the IHK Würzburg-Schweinfurt, says: “Basically, we share vbw’s view of setting the course to structurally strengthen the economy after the corona lockdown.” However, the IHK wanted “economic stimulus programs to create impulses for our economy across all sectors”. For example, it is conceivable to refrain from laws, ordinances and other regulatory projects by 2021 in order to give companies more space for their operating business, according to Genders.

Daniel Röper, spokesman for the Chamber of Crafts for Lower Franconia, says: “The emergency measures of the Federal Government and the Bavarian State Government have so far made an important contribution to the liquidity of the craft businesses in the region.” Now is the time to boost consumption and investment and to ease the burden on the craft, especially in the areas of taxes, bureaucracy and energy costs.

Unions are outraged and delighted by demands from the economy

Frank Firsching, Lower Franconian Regional Manager of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), is outraged by some of the demands. He says: “Mr. Brossardt apparently wants to use the corona pandemic to cut workers ‘rights, cut back on workers’ health protection, or stop customs customs wages from being checked by cutting down on bureaucracy.” The vbw is apparently less concerned with rescuing companies and more with a political change of direction away from the social market economy towards the free market economy. Firsching says that what this does to people in times of crisis can currently be observed in the USA.

On the other hand, vbw’s suggestions met with the unions when it came to stimulating demand and generating government investment. And even the union representative is pleased about a change of direction of the trade association: about the demand that there should be greater incentives for production of essential goods in Germany and Europe.

“Corona and climate change clearly show us the weaknesses of the old system. Keeping it up is negligent.”

Stefan Müssig, board member of the Federal Association for Environmental Consulting

Stefan Müssig, Chairman of the Federal Association for Environmental Consulting in Würzburg, criticizes the demands of the business association. The management consultant, who also heads the Lower Franconia Environmental Protection Association, says: “The well-known demands for bureaucracy reduction, tax cuts, low energy prices and even incentives for car manufacturers are becoming loud.” This is neither innovative nor sustainable.

Corona and climate change clearly showed us the weaknesses of the old system, Müssig said. Another way he considers negligent. Economic stimulus programs are true, but: “They offer a historic opportunity to initiate the transformation to a robust, crisis-proof, sustainable economic structure with our tax billions. This includes systematic environmental management, constant improvement of energy and material efficiency, switch to 100 percent renewable energies, reducing greenhouse gas emissions to climate neutrality and intelligent, human-friendly digitization of the world of work. ”
