SUBJECT: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION IN THE PROVINCES OF NORTH KIVU AND ITURI ON 31 May 2020

Date: Monday, June 01, 2020

• Since the start of the epidemic, the cumulative number of cases has been 3,463, of which 3,317 have been confirmed and 146 are probable. In total, there were 2,280 deaths (2,134 confirmed and 146 probable) and 1,171 winners (healed persons, or survivors);

• 327 suspected cases under investigation;

• No new confirmed cases have been recorded for the 34th consecutive day;

• No confirmed case is hospitalized in a CTE;

• Since the resurgence of the Ebola virus disease epidemic in Beni on April 10, 2020, 7 confirmed cases have been recorded, including 4 deceased, 2 recovered and 1 escaped person;

• Reappearance of the confirmed case of April 16, 2020 escaped from the health structure of his isolation in Beni. He returned to Beni in apparent good health 45 days after his notification and 49 days after the onset of his symptoms which dates back to April 12, 2020. Investigations are underway to confirm the identity of the patient.

Declaration of the eleventh epidemic of Ebola virus disease in Ecuador *

• The Minister of Health, Dr. Eteni Longodo, declared this Monday, June 01, 2020 in Kinshasa the eleventh epidemic of the Ebola virus disease in Mbandaka in the province of Equateur;

• It is since May 11, 2020 that the city of Mbandaka had notified 8 cases of Hemorrhagic Fever, including 3 positive cases (2 living positive and 1 positive death), 2 suspected cases and 3 probable deaths;

• Among the samples analyzed at the laboratory of the National Institute of Biomedical Research, the 3 which turned out to be positive belong to the Ebola virus of the Zaire type;

• The Minister of Health called on the population not to panic, saying that the Government has already taken all the necessary measures to respond effectively to this epidemic;

• It should be noted that the last three epidemics have followed one another without an interval of more than a month and that the tenth which has been raging in the east of the country since August 01, 2018 is still in its thirty-fourth day with no new confirmed cases. *

1. Observe basic hygiene measures, in particular regular hand washing with water and soap or ash;

2. If an acquaintance from an epidemic area comes to visit you and that he is sick, please alert the response teams or the nearby health authorities;

3. If you are identified as a contact with an Ebola patient, agree to be vaccinated and followed for 21 days;

4. If someone dies of # Ebola, follow the guidelines for safe and dignified burials. It is simply a mode of burial that respects funeral customs and traditions while protecting the family and community from contamination by the #Ebola virus;

5. For all health professionals, observe hygiene measures in health centers and report any sick person showing symptoms of Ebola (fever, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, anorexia, bleeding;

6. If all citizens respect these health measures recommended by the Secretariat, it is possible to quickly end this 10th epidemic.

*Vaccination

• 9,560 people were vaccinated, from February 14 to April 10, 2020, with the second dose of the 2nd vaccine Ad26.ZEBOV / MVA-BN-Filo (Johnson & Johnson) in the two health areas from Karisimbi to Goma;

• 20,339 people were vaccinated, until February 29, 2020, with the 2nd vaccine d26.ZEBOV / MVA-BN-Filo (Johnson & Johnson) in the two health areas from Karisimbi to Goma;

• Second day of paralysis of response activities in the health zone from Beni to Kasanga and Rwangoma. This has disrupted immunization activities;

• A total of 2,129 people were vaccinated from April 11 to May 20, 2020 around the resurgent cases of Beni;

• Since the start of vaccination on August 8, 2018 with the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine 303,905 people have been vaccinated until May 19, 2020;

• Approved on October 22, 2019 by the Ethics Committee of the School of Public Health at the University of Kinshasa and on October 23, 2019 by the National Ethics Committee, the second vaccine, called Ad26.ZEBOV / MVA-BN -Filo, is produced by Janssen Pharmaceuticals for Johnson & Johnson;

• This new vaccine complements the first, rVSV-ZEBOV, a vaccine used until then (since August 08, 2018) in this epidemic manufactured by the pharmaceutical group Merck, after approval by the Ethics Committee on May 20, 2018. It was recently pre-qualified for certification.

* Surveillance at entry points

• Since the start of the epidemic, the total number of travelers checked (temperature taking) at health checkpoints, until May 30, 2020 is 178,409,695;

• To date, a total of 50 entry points (PoE) and health control points (PoC) are operational out of the 109 set up in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri in order to protect large cities in the country and to avoid the spread of the epidemic in neighboring countries.
