Ebola epidemic in Congo not over yet; 100 cases in 3 months

It seems that Ebola has not yet been eliminated in Congo. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 100 cases of Ebola have been registered in the northwest of the African country in less than three months. 43 people died from it.

The outbreak was first reported in early June in the western town of Mbandaka on the Congo River. Shortly before, authorities reported that in the east of the country, the Ebola outbreak had stopped after two years. Since then, the disease has spread to villages in Equatorial Province.

Because the villages are often remote and therefore difficult to reach, medical care is slowly started. This makes it easier for the virus to spread, says the WHO. “Without additional support, the teams on the ground could be more difficult to prevent the virus,” said a regional director of the WHO in Africa.

Corona

The Ebola outbreak comes on top of the corona crisis. But ignoring the Ebola virus isn’t an option, according to the World Health Organization. The mortality rate among patients with the disease is much higher than for corona.

The outbreak in Congo started in August 2018 and already claimed the lives of thousands of people, making it the second worst Ebola epidemic ever. The worst epidemic, which raged in West Africa from 2013 to 2016, killed more than 11,000 people from Ebola.
