BER has not yet opened, but the first airlines are beginning to expand their presence. Easyjet opens its first maintenance station outside the UK in the region. The airline announced earlier this week. In the future, around 35 machines currently stationed in Berlin will be serviced by their own crew in Schönefeld. The company is hiring 80 new workers. Berlin is the second largest location for Easyjet after London-Gatwick. With a market share of almost 30 percent, Easyjet is the largest airline in Berlin after the Air Berlin bankruptcy.

“We decided to have our own maintenance station in the Berlin-Brandenburg region in order to further emphasize our commitment,” said Stephan Erler, head of Easyjet Germany. The new employees are to carry out scheduled maintenance work and minor repairs on the aircraft. So far, these have been carried out at various German locations by third-party companies. Major reviews take place in London-Gatwick, London-Luton and Liverpool.

Easyjet has closed the gap in Berlin by the failure of Air Berlin

Airport chief Engelbert Lütke Daldrup welcomes the commitment. “With the maintenance area, the airline is building a new business area and is already doing so Commissioning of the new airport BER lots of highly skilled jobs, ”he said. “Easyjet’s great trust in the location is an important signal for BER.”

The British low-cost airline has compensated for the gap at Berlin Airports by the failure of Air Berlin. 1500 jobs have been created since With the start of the first flights to London-Luton and Liverpool in 2004 the company continued to expand in the German capital, 400 former Air Berlin employees, including 180 pilots, hired the oranges alone. Twelve machines are stationed in Schönefeld, 23 after the takeover of parts of Air Berlin in Tegel.

Easyjet has taken over parts of Air Berlin

How things will continue after the opening of BER is still unclear. The company will decide on a case-by-case basis to head for new destinations, Erler said. Berlin will play a strong role in any case. “We are very much focused on the Berlin market,” said the Easyjet boss.

After the bankruptcies of Air Berlin airline and of the tour operator Thomas Cook the industry is in a consolidation phase, says Erler. That is why the company plans to open the existing fleet primarily with the BER opening and is less focused on growth in Germany.

For the Berlin maintenance station in Schönefeld, the company is currently looking for at least 80 new employees in various professions – from mechanics to site managers. The Schönefeld station is a so-called line maintenance. The regular heavy maintenance, in which the aircraft are thoroughly disassembled, will continue to take place in Great Britain. According to the head of Germany Erler, the establishment of the Berlin-Brandenburg maintenance structure is not related to the impending Brexit, in which Great Britain is leaving the European Union.

Easyjet in Berlin-Schönefeld: First job interviews in the coming weeks

In the coming weeks, the first job interviews with potential new employees will take place before the maintenance of the twelve Schönefeld machines starts in early summer. With the opening of BER, the 23 machines from Tegel will then be added.

After years of delay due to various technical difficulties, the opening of the breakdown airport is currently scheduled for October 31 of this year. After protracted difficulties, especially with the smoke extraction system for Terminal I, there are still technical problems with cable work, which may only be remedied shortly before the planned commissioning of the airport.
