London, Jul 19 (EFE).- The low-cost airline EasyJet and the aircraft engine manufacturer Rolls Royce announced on Tuesday an alliance with which they will develop hydrogen engines to charter commercial aircraft.

Within the framework of the international aeronautical fair in Farnborough (Hampshire, England), which started on Monday and lasts until Friday, both British companies aim to demonstrate that hydrogen has the potential to be used in a wide range of aircraft from 2030.

The low-cost airline and automotive group are committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The two groups revealed today at a press conference that they will carry out field tests by the end of this year.

In that act, the CEO of the airline, Johan Lundgren, stressed that it is necessary to adopt “radical actions” to address the impact that climate change is having on the aviation sector.

“The technology emerging from this program has the potential to charter easyJet-sized aircraft, which is why we will also be making a multi-million dollar investment in this program,” he said.

Lundgren added that “in order to achieve large-scale decarbonisation, it is crucial that progress is made in the development of zero-emissions technologies for slimline aircraft.”

“Together with Rolls Royce, we look forward to leading the industry in eradicating this challenge,” he added. EFE
