Early examination of the uterus reduces mortality due to pre-eclampsia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Doctor of the Surabaya Fetomaternal Medical Association, Nareswari Imanadha Cininta Marcianora, stated that the risk of maternal and child mortality due to pre-eclampsia (a hypertensive condition that occurs during pregnancy) can be suppressed through early examination of the condition of the womb.

“Until now, there has not been found any therapy or cure for pre-eclampsia,” he said in the virtual media briefing agenda of the Surabaya Fetomaternal Medical Association regarding Pre-eclampsia Day (22 May 2021), Friday.

Launching data from the International Society for the Study of Hypertention in Pregnancy and Pre-eclampsia Foundation, every year 76 thousand mothers and 500 thousand babies die from pre-eclampsia during pregnancy.

According to Nareswari, pre-eclampsia can be researched through symptoms such as a history of high blood pressure before pregnancy, a history of pre-eclampsia in a previous pregnancy, diabetes, kidney disorders, or autoimmune conditions such as lupus and antiphospholipids, obesity, first pregnancy, twins or more. , the last pregnancy interval was less than five years, over 40 years old and a family history of pre-eclampsia.

“Pregnant women who experience these symptoms should immediately carry out risk screening through health personnel where they usually carry out pregnancy checks,” he said.

Even if these symptoms are not felt, as a preventive measure, pregnant women still have to routinely check their blood pressure regularly so that potential hypertension can be detected early.

“Then if a pregnant woman complains of dizziness, blurred vision, and heartburn and tightness, it is likely that her pregnancy has severe pre-eclampsia, which requires delivery,” he said.

If the gestational age is still early, pre-eclampsia will also trigger prematurity, which is a major factor in the high infant mortality rate.

In addition to conducting routine checks to detect symptoms and risk factors early, it is equally important to have adequate understanding and knowledge by pregnant women as well as fertile couples who are preparing for pregnancy.

“By understanding the potential dangers that can occur in every pregnancy, we together can increase awareness and fight together to reduce maternal mortality in Indonesia,” said Chairman of the Surabaya Fetomaternal Medical Association Agus Sulistyono.

Pre-eclampsia is a hypertensive condition that occurs during pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia itself is a condition before the occurrence of eclampsia which is a frightening complication of pre-eclampsia.

Although the exact cause cannot be explained, said Agus, pre-eclampsia is often associated with placental problems. Therefore, pre-eclampsia occurs in the latter half of pregnancy beyond 20 weeks or after the placenta has formed in the uterus for up to six weeks after delivery. *
