De Caluwé came into the picture because he allegedly passed on information about former US ambassador Marie Yovanovitch to a Republican politician.
Ambassador Yovanovitch plays a major role in the President’s removal procedure. Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, is said to have interfered with her work.

Yovanovitch stated that he had been blackmailed by Giuliani during previous interrogations. She says he started a smear campaign against her because she didn’t want to cooperate in an investigation into Joe Biden’s son. Later she was removed from office.

Via the Republican politician Robert Hyde the messages from De Caluwé came to Lev Parnas, a man who works for Giuliani. As a result, the Dutchman is now suspected of spying on the ambassador.

Impeachment
The Democrats initiated the impeachment of the American president Donald Trump because they suspected him of abuse of power and impeded justice.
Trump is said to have misused his power for political gain. He would have done that by putting pressure on Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski to investigate Trumps political rival Joe Biden. As a means of pressure, Trump used the retention of military support.

The messages between De Caluwé and Hyde are, according to the Dutchman, nothing more than a joke. According to his spokesperson, Karyn Turk, he had no idea where Yovanovitch was going. Turk tells US media that they understand how the messages can be interpreted, but that De Caluwé has no contacts in Ukraine.

Apologized
He himself apologizes in a statement for the confusion that the messages have caused. “My involvement in the exchange with Rob is something that is not credible. Our friendship is jovial and this exchange was only part of ridiculous chatter.”
Who De Caluwé is exactly, is not yet out of date. You can read on his social media accounts that he has a business background. The telephone with which the messages were sent has a Belgian number. He would also have used the name Anthony Hemelrijk.
