The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has heard about the incident, but can say little about it. “In any case, no consular assistance has been requested,” a spokesperson said. The suspect will still receive this if there is a request to do so.

The fight between the two compatriots started on the terraces of two nearby establishments in El Albir, a popular place on the Costa Blanca that is part of the municipality of Alfaz del Pi, located between Benidorm and Altea. There were also other people in the catering establishments on 21 March.

Bleeding wound

Shocked eyewitnesses alerted the police and an ambulance, who quickly arrived on the scene. The injured man was found with a bleeding wound in the abdominal area. The perpetrator had already fled by then. Officers found a knife, believed to have been used in the stabbing.

Tables and chairs were also used to pelt each other, according to several Spanish media outlets. This also caused considerable damage to the bars. According to witnesses, both Dutchmen had drunk a lot.

The injured man was taken in serious condition to Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa where he underwent surgery. According to information from health personnel, he was very lucky. The knife was missing some vital organs by only a few centimeters.

Return to Spain

The 40-year-old was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Benidorm, but remarkably enough after he returned to Spain. After the serious stabbing incident, he initially fled to the Netherlands. He returned when he thought the police were no longer looking for him, but was soon arrested after arriving.

Detectives found him in a tourist apartment in Cala de Finestrat in Benidorm, where he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. According to the police, both perpetrator and victim have been involved more often in violent incidents.
