Dutch street racer arrested after accident in Antwerp | Abroad

The emergency services were alerted on Tuesday afternoon around 3.30 pm after a serious traffic accident at the Merksem exit. Two cars had been racing on the Antwerp Ring and after leaving the highway collided with a third vehicle. A couple was seriously injured.

The two cars – a white Mercedes with a German number plate and a black Mercedes with a Dutch number plate – drove at dizzying speed on the Antwerp Ring towards Ghent. “When traffic slowed down, the two continued their race on the hard shoulder and took the Merksem exit,” said Willem Migom, spokesman for the Antwerp police.

“The white Mercedes hit the soft verge and spun. The black Mercedes rammed into a third vehicle at high speed, which had a couple in it.” The fire brigade freed the couple from the third car. Both occupants were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The police were able to arrest the driver of the black Mercedes, a Dutchman, on the spot. “The man also passed a positive drug test,” said police spokesman Migom. “The driver of the white Mercedes has left his vehicle and fled.” Police are currently looking for this driver.

The two racing cars were seized for further investigation.
