Dutch Rowers Dominate World Championships with Gold Medals in Single and Double Sculls

Karolien Florijn extended her title in the single scull at the World Championships on Sunday. The rower was much stronger than her competition in Belgrade. The duo Stef Broenink-Melvin Twellaar took gold in the double scull.

Florijn was in a class of his own on Lake Sava and kept the number two, New Zealand’s Emma Twigg, more than five seconds behind her. Tara Rigney (Australia) came third.

25-year-old Florijn became world champion for the first time last year in Racice, Czech Republic. With her new gold medal, she is the first Dutch rower to successfully defend a World Cup title of an Olympic class.

Simon van Dorp took silver in the men’s single sculls. The 26-year-old rower had to admit his superiority to the German Oliver Zeidler in the final. Tom Mackintosh from New Zealand completed the podium.

Best World Cup ever for the Netherlands

Broenink and Twellaar started in the double sculls and quickly built up an unbridgeable lead. The Croatian brothers Valent and Martin Sinkovic crossed the finish line in second place 3.25 seconds later. Ireland took bronze.

By reaching the final, Broenink and Twellaar had already assured the double sculls of qualification for next year’s Games. The Dutch rowing team has already qualified with eight boats.

The Netherlands already experienced the best World Cup ever with three gold medals and a silver medal on Saturday. At last year’s World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic, the Netherlands had to settle for one world title and eight silver medals.

The Dutch team has another chance to win honors on Sunday with the Holland Acht. Qualification for the Games is still at stake for this boat.
