Mayors in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant want the possession of fireworks to be banned this New Year, in addition to sales. They fear that people across the border will buy their fireworks and set off in the Netherlands. When carrying fireworks is prohibited, they think they can enforce better. Moreover, they want Belgium to ban sales to the Dutch.

The Eindhoven mayor John Jorritsma informs the AD that enforcers regularly encounter people who say that they only have fireworks in their pocket. “And then you can’t do anything,” said Jorritsma. “Together with my colleagues Theo Weterings from Tilburg and Jack Mikkers from Den Bosch, I explicitly advocated a national fireworks ban. That’s what happened. But then it must be arranged that we can properly implement that ban. ”

Paul Depla van Breda also supports the call. The mayors prefer to see sales to Dutch customers prohibited in Belgium. “It would make a big difference to all residents for safety and clarity if the countries coordinate their affairs,” Weterings said in the newspaper. “I appeal to everyone not to buy fireworks. Is it such a problem to leave this one year to relieve people in healthcare? ”

Due to the crowds in hospitals due to the corona virus, fireworks may not be sold or set off in the Netherlands this year. But the Dutch are allowed to buy a maximum of 25 kilos of fireworks abroad and take them home.

Earlier this week, mayor Mark Slinkman of the East Dutch border municipality of Berg en Dal also argued for a one-time import ban on fireworks from Germany.
