A 53-year-old Dutch hiker died yesterday after falling from a steep rock path in the French Vosges. According to France 3 the man fell on the steepest part of the trail while walking with his wife. Police say he tripped over a walking stick.
Emergency services organized a rescue operation, which involved a helicopter and a number of climbers. They found the man’s body about 100 meters below.
Sentier Des Roches is a well-known hiking trail with a height difference of about 400 meters. At altitudes between 962 meters and 1363 meters, hikers walk along a path carved into the rock, among other things. Hikers can hold on to a railing there. The trail attracts nearly 45,000 hikers a year.
The walk is known as one of the most difficult in Alsace. On average, one hiker per year dies, reported France 3 earlier.
