Duque accepts the resignation of Margarita Cabello to the Ministry of Justice

President Iván Duque accepted his resignation on Tuesday morning, leaving the path of the now ex-minister to the Attorney General’s Office free, a race in which he is emerging as a virtual winner after the support collected this weekend.

Duque, who appointed Cabello to the Attorney General’s Office, highlighted his management in the ministry on issues such as prison policy and the drive for life imprisonment against rapists of minors, a project approved in the Senate plenary on June 18 after 13 failed attempts in recent years.

Cabello has a long political and professional career. Born in Barranquilla, she is a lawyer graduated from the Corporación Universitaria de la Costa, a specialist in Family Law from the Externado de Colombia University and a Specialist in Civil Procedural Law from the Externado de Colombia University.

In addition to serving as magistrate of the Civil Chamber and President of the Supreme Court of Justice, she was for three years (2009-2012) Delegate Attorney of the Disciplinary Chamber of the Attorney General’s Office. She exercised, between June 2019 until the present, the leadership of the Ministry of Justice.

During this weekend, Cabello achieved the political support of the Conservative, Democratic Center and Radical Change parties in her intention to become the first woman to lead the control entity. With these, she would almost certainly have her election in the Congress of the Republic.
