Duermevela is born, an editorial of fantastic literature “to continue dreaming”

Gijón, Jan 3 (EFE) .- Publishing hitherto unedited books of fantasy literature in Spain that go beyond the epic that defines classics of the genre as “The Lord of the Rings” is the objective of the new publishing house Duermevela , “the little and family madness” of the sisters Almudena and Rebeca Cardeñoso to stimulate the imagination of non-judgmental readers.

The first economist, the second with a degree in Fine Arts, and the great-granddaughters of the founder of the historic Viña de Gijón Lithography, founded in 1920, assure that, after many years as readers who are fond of this genre, they have long been determined to bring to light “voices different from those of western culture to discover new worlds and diverse realities “.

“We want to contribute something different, intimate books with different points of view, starting with authors that fascinated me, that were only published in English and that were very difficult to find in Spain,” says Almudena, whose love of fantasy literature has been expressing for some time time through his channel Magrat Ajostmicos on Youtube.

The objective, he points out, is to revalue the genre also from a special care of the editions that they make with the inclusion of specific appendices and prologues that give context to the works, some of them illustrated, treating each book as something unique and different and giving them the personality they have on the inside and also on the outside.

With a forecast of publishing between six and seven books a year, both in physical and digital format, the promoters of Duermevela assume that in the current circumstances the benefits of a small publishing activity “will always be very low, very tight” and that the task of publishing authors little known in Spain supposes “a constant fight with everything”.

They seek, according to Rebeca Cardeñoso, who will combine her work as an editor with that of a teacher in the painting workshop where she works, “a much more direct relationship with the readers” convinced that, despite everything, “there is a space for literature fantastic that it gets out of the epic “with works that in many cases enjoy recognition in their country of origin.

Dueremevela’s forecasts include publishing his first works in the first quarter of this year, a catalog of classic and contemporary authors that will open with the publication of the first volume of the Tensorado saga, “The black tides of the sky”, from Singaporean Neon Yang, best short novel in 2017 of the Nebula awards

“It cost us a kidney to publish it because it is a very complicated work on a linguistic level but it is full of action and entertainment. If I had read it as a teenager, it would have made me rethink many things,” say the promoters of Duermevela, which will be published throughout 2021 two other novels of that saga that will close next year with the fourth installment.

In addition, throughout this first quarter, “Eld’s forgotten beasts”, by Patricia McKillip, a modern classic of the fantasy genre, translated for the first time into Spanish, in which its author gives a twist to classic fairy tales to talk about power dynamics, feminism and social oppression.

Duermevela’s work will continue with “The Curse of the Tram 015”, by P. Djèli Clark, a novel that imagines an alternative Egypt as a mecca of modern civilization and that includes the debate on the right to vote for women at the beginning of the 20th century. EFE
