Even if his result is likely to be somewhat better than in the exit polls, Poland’s conservative President Andrzej Duda missed the absolute majority after partial results published in the presidential election on Monday and must be in the run-off against his liberal challenger Rafal Trzaskowski.
After counting more than 87 percent of the votes, Duda came to 45.2 percent, as the election commission announced. Trzaskowski therefore accounted for 28.9 percent. Duda had seen initial forecasts at just under 42 percent and Trzaskowski at 30.4 percent. On July 12, both candidates must go to the runoff. A defeat by Duda would significantly weaken the national conservative government party Law and Justice (PiS).
According to the commission, the turnout was 53.3 percent. Independent candidate Rafal Holownia was third with just under 13.7 percent.
