Driving test in New York: what do I need to bring on the day of the test

After passing the vision test along with the written test and receiving the learner’s permit, applicants for a driver’s license in the state of New York may consider themselves ready to schedule an appointment for their driving test, which is applied by an expert assigned by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). However, before setting a date, they must first hold the permit for a certain amount of time, while meeting a series of additional requirements that must be recorded on the day of the exam.

Like the maneuvers that must be performed in the presence of a DMV evaluator, such requirements necessary for the driving test can define the final grade and their absence may be a reason to suspend the test if the evaluator considers it necessary.

What do I need to bring on the day of the driving test for a driver’s license in New York?

According to the official website of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Every applicant for a driver’s license in New York must collect and record the following requirements On the day of the appointment you have scheduled for your driving test:

1. A vehicle that is licensed and registered for the test drive. The vehicle must function properly and be in good condition.
2. A photo learner’s permit.
3. Eyeglasses or contact lenses, if the permit indicates that you need corrective lenses.
4. An original and unexpired pre-licensing course certificate (MV-278) or Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285). This certificate is obtained after completing a driver’s education program, either at school or university. Such program must be at least 5 hours long.
5. If the applicant is under 18 years of age, a Supervised Driving Certification (PDF) (MV-262) completed by your parent or guardian. You must turn it in to the examiner each time you take a practical test.
6. A driver 21 years of age or older who has a valid license to operate the test vehicle. Other companions are not allowed.

After finishing the test, the applicant receives the results the same day on a website that the examiner points out. It is estimated that they will be available after 6:00 p.m. If approved, the applicant will also receive —by the same means— a provisional license that they can use while receiving the permanent document sent to their postal address within a maximum period of 2 weeks.

People who fail the driving test have another chance to take it. If the same thing happens a second time, they can continue to use their permission in other attempts, but they will have to pay additional fees to obtain new tests.
