Driver of getaway car ‘knew nothing’, gunman after murder of De Vries: ‘Everything okay’ Inland

COURT BEGINSAccording to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspects of the murder of Peter R. de Vries emphatically worked together. Still, driver Kamil E. says he didn’t know anything about the murder plans. The suspected shooter, Delano G., keeps his mouth shut in the Amsterdam court. The first hearing in the case is now taking place there.

Royce, the son of Peter R. de Vries, gets a pat on his back. There they are, the relatives of the crime reporter who helped so many relatives in their lifetime. They watch the suspects walk in. The suspected shooter, Delano G., is a short man, dressed in a white shirt. Suspected driver Kamil E. has tattoos on his neck, looks a bit nervous as he steps inside.

The public prosecutor outlines how the two worked together. According to him, this has become apparent from information obtained from house searches, but also from reading camera images. Together they walked on July 6 – the fateful day – past the studio of RTL Boulevard, where Peter R. de Vries made a media appearance. G. changed his clothes in the car they arrived in, and then set off again. While E. drove in circles, G. struck. he was waiting for a step on de Vries. The crime reporter was hit in the head and right hip.

‘Everything OK?’

Nevertheless, E. initially said that it was ‘not his car’, and that he did not know G.. But the officer talks about camera images, which show how E. has already looked around in the area before and also keeps an eye on Peter R. de Vries. “As far as we are concerned, there is no doubt that E. carried out a preliminary reconnaissance.” From conversations E. had with his girlfriend from prison, it appears how he tried to arrange an alibi through her, for the 28th June on which he would have carried out the preliminary reconnaissance.

E. himself still washes his hands in innocence, while G. remains silent. “I didn’t kill anyone, I didn’t have any weapons. I was given information the day before where to go.” He just had to bring someone to Amsterdam for a meeting. “The one I brought said, ‘Don’t worry’.”

As E. got back into the car, E. asked him a question: “Is everything okay?” The answer: “Yes,” and off they drove. Moments later, E. saw a police car driving behind him – he didn’t know why. When he told G. to stop, he would have said “Okay” again. Later on, the police also found fuel in the car, to set the getaway car up in flames, as has actually happened in other liquidations. In the trunk was a machine gun with DNA from both suspects, just like a converted emergency pistol. The latter weapon was used in the attack.

E. does not explain how that is possible. He does speak about the camera images of the alleged preliminary reconnaissance. “I can’t, I was at home.” Until now, E. did not cooperate with interrogations, just like his co-defendant.

Suspects

The first public hearing on the murder of crime journalist De Vries is not yet substantive. It is a preparatory session. This means, among other things, that any research wishes are discussed. The two suspects have therefore come to attend this hearing.

First of all, 22-year-old G, who lives in Rotterdam but also has an address in Tiel. G. is a cousin of Jaouad ‘Joey’ W., who is seen as the leader of a ‘murder gang’ of Taghi. He is suspected of having shot De Vries on July 6 in the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat in the center of Amsterdam, after his performance in the RTL Boulevard program. He was on his way to the parking garage to get his car. G.’s lawyer doubts whether a fair trial can take place – the file consists of purely anonymous statements, he denounces that.

E. is 35 years old and comes from Maurik in Gelderland. He allegedly drove the getaway car. E. was also arrested by the police in Maurik a week earlier. That was for a threat, possibly with a firearm. His lawyer emphasizes that the client is ‘very firm’ in his denial, including in conversations with his family and partner. His lawyer does not think that E. was recognized by his tattoos and nike jacket during the alleged preliminary reconnaissance. “A lot of men fit this description.” E.’s house was also searched for 50,000 euros that he would have received, but that money was not found. “Not a shred of evidence has been found that the client is involved in crime.”

Taghi

Both suspects were arrested shortly after the attack. The two were stuck on the A4, near the Leidschendam exit, and arrested. De Vries was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died of his injuries nine days later. A motive for the murder is not yet known. Justice suspects that top criminal Ridouan Taghi is behind the attack. Since last year, De Vries has been an adviser and confidant of crown witness Nabil B in the Marengo liquidation process, with the main suspect Ridouan Taghi.

Since the beginning of 2018 it was announced that B. had presented himself as a key witness, his innocent brother Reduan was first shot dead. In September 2019, his lawyer Derk Wiersum was murdered.
