Dresden: The last parking spaces at Theaterplatz are no longer available

Dresden. The winter had slowed the builders on the Augustus Bridge. The work had to be interrupted at times. But the bridge renovators from Hentschke Bau are currently making progress. At least for now. Because the temperatures should drop again. The city, which gives an overview of the work, announced that “the weather conditions, which are still partly winter, can lead to delays”.

The restriction: the diversion must be rerouted

The intersection at Theaterplatz from Sophienstrasse towards Terrassenufer has been completely closed since January 2020. The traffic rolls over a diversion in front of the Italian village. But now the last parking spaces on Theaterplatz have been omitted because this half of the road is needed. The other side in front of the Italian village is closed because a drinking water pipe is being changed there, explains the city. It will stay that way until at least August. Because from May this street will be renovated.

The intersection should be much safer in the future. The acute-angled junction from Sophienstrasse in the direction of the Terrassenufer will be improved. It is intended to narrow it and apply it at a 90-degree angle. There are also pedestrian crossings.

Protection: Tent erected for road builders

The old town bridge connection is currently still being established. The footpaths in the area are already finished, as are the tracks. The route was built as a so-called slab track. The track lies in a stable concrete structure that is supposed to last 60 years. Only worn rails have to be replaced, not the substructure.

The road is now paved under a tent about 15 meters long and almost ten meters wide. Hot fans provide the necessary heat, as this work requires at least five degrees. The once bumpy, bumpy pavement of the road can no longer be used. Because it was not only a fall trap for pedestrians, but also not easy to use for cyclists.

Therefore, the bridge and the connections are given a covering made of cut paving, which also corresponds to the historical picture. A small test area with cut old stones had already been laid out on the bridge before the renovation. But the corners of the stones had broken off under the strain. That is why the city, together with the monument protection department, selected new paving stones with a rough surface.

The parapet: first sandstones for the fourth arch

The sandstone parapets are currently being relocated on the second side of the bridge downstream from the Elbe. Around 2,000 parapet stones have been dismantled there. Around a third of it was so damaged that new stones had to be provided. The old stones have been numbered exactly so that they can be put back in the same place. This is also how the newly manufactured stones are marked. The Sächsische Sandsteinwerke Pirna produce the new parapet stones.

They are currently being installed on the old town side above the fourth arch. The stones for the fifth arch are already ready. But with the announced cold, the specialists will probably have to interrupt their work again.

The connection: construction of a footpath in front of the log house

In parallel to the parapet construction, the granite slabs of the footpath on the old town side are also being laid, currently above the second arch. On the Neustadt side, the builders are in the process of laying these slabs at the connection to Grosse Meißner Strasse in front of the log house.

The city promises to have all the parapets on the Augustus Bridge by summer. Then the second footpath can be released. Then the road construction begins. It is planned that it will be ready in late summer so that the Dresden public transport company can expand the Gleisdreieck at Neustädter Markt.

In the course of this, handicapped-accessible stops will be built at the height of the log house on both sides by the end of the year. From the end of the year, the trains should roll over the Augustus Bridge again.
