Dresden: Demonstration and climate fair in Dresden

Dresden. With a demonstration and a climate fair in front of the Kulturpalast In Dresden on Saturday, representatives of several environmental protection organizations pointed out the possibilities of making city and country climate neutral.

Instead of stirring up fears, the focus of the organizers this time was on positive approaches that should spread hope for improvement. “Even if it is essential to keep addressing current problems and grievances, it is just as important to highlight the challenges of the climate crisis as an opportunity,” emphasized Christian Bläul, spokesman for the Extinction Rebellion organization.

After a joint demonstration from Jorge-Gomondai-Platz towards the city center, for which there were only a few participants, the first fair of its kind started at 4 pm in front of the Kulturpalast. Passers-by could meet at the stands of BUND, Nabu, Greenpeace and Fridays for Future, Extinction Rebellion (XR) and DresdenZero.

The Parents for Future initiative took the opportunity to raise awareness for their to advertise nationwide hands-on campaign “climate bands”, in which everyone can perpetuate wishes and demands on colorful ribbons. In August, the climate bands are to be brought to Berlin during a bicycle rally to blow in public spaces, as spokeswoman Julia Saarinen said.

With the help of the fair, the climate initiatives wanted to show that the climate change is possible without the quality of life having to suffer. Many people now know about the consequences of global warming, it said. However, they often felt helpless and believed that there was nothing they could do about it.

“What is less well known, however, is that there are enough proposals to prevent the climate catastrophe,” said Iris Kämper from Extinction Rebellion. “The political decision-makers must start immediately to implement the well-developed measures.”

With around 300 visitors, the trade fair – in contrast to the demonstration parade – was rated a success by the organizers. A repetition is conceivable and wanted.
