Drenthe’s provincial politicians concluded their last meeting on Wednesday with a good intention. The Provincial Council adopted a motion calling on the provincial government and members of Parliament to participate in the province’s New Year’s dive.
Member of Parliament Alfred Schoenmaker of Sterk Lokaal Drenthe submitted the motion. He did this because he thinks it is “good to keep moving in the context of the incumbent profession of the Members of Parliament”, and politicians must set a good example.
The motion was adopted by a majority of the members of Parliament, with 33 votes in favor and 8 against. According to the motion, each faction must participate with a delegation.
The members of the Provincial Executive, the administrators of the province, are also called upon to participate, as are some of the supporting civil servants. Deputy Henk Jumelet, who has sports in his portfolio, promised to participate in the dive on behalf of the council.
“If I can, I will come and have a look. But I will not dive,” said Jetta Klijnsma, King’s Commissioner in Drenthe.
The dive will take place on January 8 in the Baggelhuizerplas near Assen. The Province of Drenthe is co-organizer of this dive.
