Dramatic Scenes in the Cockpit: Young Co-Pilot Saves the Day as Captain Falls Ill During Landing in Frankfurt

Dramatic scenes in the cockpit: before landing in Frankfurt, the captain of a holiday plane suddenly falls ill. A young co-pilot has to prove himself.

A holiday plane from Eurowings Discover experienced an emergency in the cockpit when landing at Frankfurt Airport last week: As reported by the “Aviation Herald” portal, an Airbus A320-200 was on its way from Heraklion in Greece to Frankfurt am Main on Wednesday when the captain of the machine suddenly became “incapacitated”. The incident has only just become known.

Because of the sudden illness of the captain, details were not known, the first officer of the machine took over the helm. According to the “Aviation Herald”, the man was a young professional who had only recently worked as a co-pilot for the airline. The young pilot managed to land the machine safely on the Frankfurt runway.

Helicopter takes the captain to the clinic – praise for the co-pilot

A rescue helicopter was already waiting there for the sick pilot, who was then taken to a hospital. Apparently, the Eurowings Discover machine was given priority over other planes because of the emergency. Data from the “Flightradar24” portal shows that after touching down directly on the runway, the plane was taken directly to a parking position instead of having to wait a few minutes for a parking space.

At the time of the incident, the young pilot of the plane was still at the very beginning of his career: After completing commercial pilot training, flight students begin their work in the cockpit as co-pilot. As a rule, they have significantly less flying experience than the captain. Therefore, they do not carry the final command on board. Depending on the airline, a co-pilot must have between 3,000 and 6,000 hours of flight experience before they can be promoted to captain.

In the comments below the portal’s report, the young pilot was praised by aviation connoisseurs. One user wrote, for example: “This is a situation that nobody wants to experience. Especially not someone who has just started their job and doesn’t have a lot of experience.” Another wrote: “Dealing with a sudden situation with only one pilot and a sick captain in the next seat would be a sphincter-clenching situation, even for a first officer with thousands of hours in the air.”

Eurowings Discover told the scene portal that all passengers were able to leave the machine safely after the medical incident in the cockpit. The machine stayed on the ground in Hesse for about four hours and then continued on its next flight.
